Village Super Market Inc. will get a new leader, while still keeping it in the family.
The Springfield-based company started by Nick and Perry Sumas in 1937 operates 29 ShopRite supermarkets in New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania and Maryland.
Nick Sumas’ son, James Sumas, has served as chairman of the board of directors since 1989 and CEO since 2002. He announced this week he will step down from both roles as of Dec. 15.
He will be appointed chairman emeritus in honor of his more than 62 years serving the company.
His brother, Robert Sumas, will then be appointed CEO, with Perry Sumas’ son, William Sumas, taking over as board chairman.
Robert Sumas has served as president since 2009. William Sumas has been the board’s vice chairman since 2009.
