Atlantic Health System and Kentucky-based Kindred Healthcare, which announced a definitive agreement to open a 38-bed rehabilitation facility in northern New Jersey last year, have decided on a location.
That location will be Giralda Farms in Madison, which is the first phase of a 40-acre parcel that will turn into a campus for health services, according to a statement Monday.
The location is formerly the estate of Geraldine Rockefeller Dodge, and will serve as Atlantic Health’s new flagship rehab site — moving it from an existing location in Morristown that is in the process of being sold.
“We are excited to have secured a site to build a modernized, adaptable space that truly complements our exceptional inpatient rehabilitation services, and also allows us to grow, enhance and develop services to help us to build healthier communities,” said Trish O’Keefe, president of Morristown Medical Center.
The new facility, with all private rooms, will focus on rehabilitation for patients who suffer from stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, neurological disorders, orthopedic disorders, multiple trauma, amputation and other injuries or disorders.
The two-story facility will be built on 46,000 square feet, and was approved by the Madison planning board Nov. 13.

The land was acquired by Atlantic Health System from another joint venture consisting of Normandy Real Estate Partners, MRY Associates and HP Giralda 2014 LLC, which acquired the property in 2015, according to a statement.
“When we acquired this last development parcel within Giralda Farms almost three years ago, we promised to undertake the highest standard of planning and development — and we’re making good on that promise by turning over its future stewardship to Atlantic Health System. A groundbreaking is anticipated in the first quarter of 2018.
