Meadowlands Racetrack to begin sports betting July 15 — without competition from N.Y.

Imagine that: New Jersey appears to be poised to take some gambling revenue away from other states.

The Meadowlands Racetrack plans to begin offering sports betting on July 15, Jeff Gural, the track’s operator, told the Associated Press.

The site not only will be the northernmost spot offering sports betting for New Jerseyans, it also figures to allow New Jersey to capitalize on those in New York City who want to bet on sports.

The opportunity presented itself when the New York Legislature finished its legislative session without passing a sports betting bill.

“New York did me such a favor by not passing sports betting,” Gural told the AP. “That leaves me the entirety of New York City, Long Island, Westchester County. There are 15 million people that live within 20 miles (32 kilometers) of the Meadowlands. They gave me a tremendous gift.”
