Grant Thornton adds AI expert to Iselin office

A cognitive computing expert is joining Grant Thornton LLP’s Iselin office to serve as managing director of applied artificial intelligence, the tax and advisory firm said Monday.

In his new role, J.T. Kostman, a data scientist specializing in AI and cognitive computing, will lead development and delivery of AI, machine learning, Internet of Things, blockchain and other analytic solutions and services for the firm and its clients.

“Grant Thornton and I are like-minded in our views on the potential for artificial intelligence, machine learning, IoT and robotics to improve operations and create new opportunities,” he said in a prepared statement. “We share a commitment to helping enterprises move past the hype and focus on how they can use these technologies to improve their businesses. It’s all about bottom-line outcomes.”

Kostman has been a chief data officer for Time Inc., chief data scientist for Samsung and more. He will report to National Managing Principal of Innovation Kevin Baril.

“Applied artificial intelligence is the future of business — an asset and an opportunity enterprises must embraces,” Baril said in a statement. “J.T.’s experience and credentials, which speak for themselves, will be pivotal to Grant Thornton making the most of our capabilities in this revolutionary space — and helping clients transform.”
