Murphy names Freeman as chair of University Hospital

Gov. Phil Murphy announced Wednesday that Tanya Freeman has been named chair of University Hospital.

Freeman was first named to the board of directors at Newark-based University Hospital in September 2014 and will serve as chair until her term has expired.

“Today I am proud to designate Tanya Freeman as chair of Newark’s University Hospital,” Murphy said. “Tanya’s experience on the board, coupled with her extensive background working for the best interests of children and families through her law practice and her community service, make her an exceptional candidate to serve in this leadership position.”

“I take great pride in my contributions to University Hospital and the communities it serves, and I am honored to continue my service as chair,” Freeman said. “I look forward to continuing to work with my fellow board members, medical practitioners, and community members to provide the best possible care to everyone who walks through our doors.”

“Tanya Freeman’s leadership on the Board of Trustees at University Hospital will be foundational for the substantial improvements we hope to see in the months ahead,” Health Commissioner Dr. Shereef Elnahal said. “Her breadth of experience and track record of success will bode well for the hospital’s future.”

Freeman is currently a partner at Parsippany-based Weiner Law Group LLP. Before practicing law, she spent 15 years in the banking and insurance industry.
