SobelCo, a middle-market accounting firm in Livingston formerly known as Sobel & Co., announced Monday that it will merge with Weber, Shapiro & Co. in Woodcliff Lake in January.
“SobelCo was founded in 1956 with a vision for seamlessly blending the business acumen and sophisticated technical expertise that are common attributes of larger professional service firms with the personal touch that is the hallmark of midsize firms,” Alan Sobel, managing member of SobelCo, said. “Our merger with the partners and professional staff at Weber, Shapiro & Co. complements our vision because they, too, have been able to deliver the valuable solutions and suggestions that are essential for the leaders of today’s privately-held, family-owned businesses.”
“The merger of our two firms under the SobelCo name will serve to reinforce the mission of both firms, with important benefits for the clients and the business community,” Mark Weber, co-founder and managing partner of Weber, Shapiro & Co., said. “As a result of our merger, we will not only extend our geographic reach, but also we will enhance each other’s strengths as we share important resources, niche knowledge and powerful relationships in the business community.”
SobelCo will increase its influence in key industry sectors with more than 150 employees across the tri-state area, as it retains the Weber, Shapiro & Co. locations in Woodcliff Lake and New York City and its current offices in Livingston and Paoli, Pennsylvania.
The merger also will increase SobelCo’s focus on technology, telecommunications and international tax practice, including the addition of Weber, Shapiro & Co.’s expatriate niche practice in preparing tax returns for U.S. citizens living abroad and foreign citizens living in the U.S.
Weber, Shapiro & Co. employees will benefit from SobelCo’s continued success in forensic accounting, fraud, valuations and litigation support.
Both firms are well-recognized and well-respected by clients in professional service firms, manufacturing and logistics companies, retail, real estate, nonprofit and social services, financial services and employee benefit plans. In addition, both firms have experience with franchises, media and marketing, and providing back office outsourcing/core accounting functions, CFO support and other concierge services.
The merger also will provide the firm with the opportunity to serve in not one, but two international organizations, as SobelCo currently serves as a member firm in Allinial Global and Weber, Shapiro & Co. is an active participant with the Alliott Group.
“Over the years, we have carefully managed our firm’s growth while seeking partners who align with our culture and increase our opportunities. We have found that great fit with Weber, Shapiro & Co.,” Sobel said.
