Lowenstein’s Matey confirmed to U.S. Court of Appeals for 3rd Circuit

Paul B. Matey, a former federal prosecutor and legal adviser to former Gov. Chris Christie, has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, according to Roseland-based Lowenstein Sandler.

Matey, who joined the firm in 2018, currently serves as partner in its Litigation Department.

“Though Paul’s tenure at the firm was brief, he brought a wealth of experience and knowledge related to health care and the government that will have a lasting impact on our firm,” Gary M. Wingens, chairman and managing partner, Lowenstein, said. “Paul’s background makes him a great choice to join the Third Circuit, and his appointment to the federal bench dovetails nicely with our firm’s long-held commitment to public service.”

Prior to Lowenstein, Matey was an assistant U.S. attorney for the District of New Jersey from 2005 to 2009, then served as a top legal adviser in the Christie administration from 2010 to 2015. He then served as senior vice president, general counsel and secretary at University Hospital in Newark from 2015 to 2018.

“Paul is a fantastic lawyer and will make an even better judge,” Christopher Porrino, partner and chair of Lowenstein’s Litigation Department. “We wish him all the best and cannot wait to see the great contributions he makes to the Third Circuit and to the federal judiciary in general.”
