Futurewei’s woes to cost 49 Bridgewater workers their jobs

A massive shakeup involving the U.S. unit of a Chinese telecommunications equipment company has ramifications in New Jersey, with nearly 50 people likely losing their jobs in Bridgewater.

According to published reports, Futurewei Technologies, the U.S. arm of Huawei Technologies, was placed on a trade blacklist earlier this year by the U.S. government, meaning it could not transfer sensitive technologies back to its parent company.

As a result, Huawei opted to lay off as many as 70% of Futurewei’s 850 workers nationwide.

A federal WARN notice filed with the New Jersey Department of Labor & Workforce Development said 49 jobs could be lost in Bridgewater by September.

“Due to business challenges, company is reducing investment in U.S. research and development,” the notice said.

Affected employees would receive severance and benefits if certain conditions are met, the notice indicated.
