Kenilworth-based Merck & Co. is eliminating 500 jobs, primarily based out of a Pennsylvania facility, but including some in New Jersey.
According to a federal WARN notice filed with the Keystone State, the cuts in Montgomery County would affect workers at locations with North Wales and Lansdale addresses, as well as remote workers residing outside the state.
A company spokesperson told ROI-NJ that a small percentage of the employees are located in New Jersey.
“The WARN notice yesterday is regarding several changes in our U.S. commercial organization,” the spokesperson said in an emailed statement. “Approximately 500 people will be affected in select sales and headquarters commercial teams. The roles being eliminated are located across all states; but, for administrative purposes, the jobs are associated with Merck’s (facility) in Upper Gwynedd, Pennsylvania.”
The spokesperson said those affected by the cuts, which are scheduled for Jan. 3, 2020, are eligible to apply for other positions with the company, which is adding positions in other areas of U.S. operations.
“This is not a new restructuring effort; these changes are part of ongoing companywide efforts to sharpen Merck’s focus on innovative research and development that addresses significant unmet medical needs and on our best opportunities for growth,” the spokesperson said.
The news of the cuts was first reported in the Philadelphia Business Journal.
