N.J. unemployment filing moves to online only

The coronavirus outbreak unfortunately will mean that many people will need to file for unemployment — some for the first time. Because of coronavirus, that will now be done a different way.

As a preventative health measure to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 and as a way to speed service delivery, New Jersey Labor Commissioner Robert Asaro-Angelo announced Monday night, in-person Unemployment Insurance services are temporarily suspended at all New Jersey One-Stop Career Center offices, effective immediately.

The anticipated reopening is in two weeks, on March 30. Of course, all timelines are subject to change right now.

Customers needing to file for unemployment insurance are urged to apply online at MyUnemployment.nj.gov.

“We are experiencing extraordinarily high call volume and longer-than-usual wait times,” Asaro-Angelo said in a release. “Filing online is easy and will ensure your claim is processed in the fastest way possible.”

If you are unable to access the internet, the DOL advised you use the following numbers:

  • North Jersey:  201-601-4100;
  • Central Jersey:  732-761-2020;
  • South Jersey:  856-507-2340.
