Saint Michael’s Medical Center in Newark announced on Thursday it has appointed Dr. Alan Sickles as its new chief operating officer.
Sickles, a noted health care worker with experience in academic institutions and safety net hospitals, has worked in physician executive roles at NYU Langone Health, Lutheran Healthcare, North General Hospital and Cabrini Medical Center.
“Dr. Sickles has demonstrated success in providing operational expertise to ensure the delivery of quality healthcare services in major health systems including academic institutions and safety net hospitals,” Dr. Sonia Mehta, CEO of Region II for Prime Healthcare and corporate chief medical officer, who will continue to serve as interim CEO of Saint Michael’s, said.
“He has deep experience in recruitment and retention of administrative staff and physicians and a strong commitment to leadership development and mentoring staff,” Dr. Mehta said.
Saint Michael’s, which is both a safety net hospital and a teaching hospital affiliated with New Yorrk Medical College, was purchased by Prime Healthcare in 2016.
“I am thrilled to join the leadership team of a hospital that is fully committed to serving its community with high-quality, compassionate healthcare,” Sickles said. “I understand how critical Saint Michael’s is to Newark and the surrounding community and my goal is to continue the improvements that began when Prime Healthcare purchased the hospital in 2016.”
Most recently, Sickles worked as a consultant for the MITRE Corp.
