Global law firm hires former DLA Piper attorney to start N.J. Transactions Practice

Squire Patton Boggs, a law firm with an office in Summit, has bolstered its Global Corporate Practice with the addition of a former co-managing partner of DLA Piper LLP’s Short Hills office, it announced recently.

Michael E. Helmer’s arrival will help the global firm start a New Jersey Transactions Practice, it said.

He focuses his practice on mergers & acquisitions, corporate finance and more in the energy and power, technology and other sectors, and also serves as an outside general counsel and has experience in the transportation and logistics industry.

“Mike brings substantial experience handling sophisticated international transactions for clients, as well as deep industry expertise that overlaps with several of our existing areas of focus,” Daniel G. Berick, Americas chair of the Global Corporate Practice, said in a prepared statement. “His private equity and venture capital experience also builds upon our continued growth in those important areas. We are delighted to welcome him to the team.”

Helmer has handled hundreds of transactions in a career of almost three decades. The move to Squire Patton Boggs reunites him with Mark Sheridan, the firm’s New Jersey managing partner.

“I am absolutely delighted to join Squire Patton Boggs and my former colleague, Mark Sheridan,” he said in a statement. “The firm has many strong practice areas and capabilities that align well with my background and will bring the substantial advantages of the firm’s global platform to my clients. I am excited to join such an exceptional team of professionals and look forward to working with my new colleagues across the U.S. and abroad.”
