ADP: Private sector employment up nearly 170K jobs in July

    Private sector employment increased by nearly 170,000 jobs between June and July, according to the July ADP National Employment Report by Roseland-based ADP.

    “The labor market recovery slowed in the month of July,” Ahu Yildirmaz, vice president and co-head of the ADP Research Institute, said. “We have seen the slowdown impact businesses across all sizes and sectors.”

    The report by the payroll and human services company said the month saw a 167,000-job increase in nonfarm private employment.

    There were both gains and losses in all company sizes and sectors, ADP said.

    Large businesses with more than 500 workers led the way, gaining 129,000 jobs during the period, while small businesses with less than 50 workers gained 63,000 and medium businesses with 50 to 499 employees lost 25,000.

    It was a positive month for the goods-producing and service-providing sectors, as both saw upticks in the job market — 1,000 and 166,000 new positions, respectively.

    Among industries:

    • Natural resources/mining: -1,000;
    • Construction: -8,000;
    • Manufacturing: 10,000;
    • Trade/transportation/utilities: 41,000;

    • Financial activities: -18,000;
    • Professional/business services: 58,000;
    • Education/health services: 46,000;
    • Leisure/hospitality: 38,000;
    • Other services: 3,000;
    • Franchise jobs: 21,200.

    The data sample represents 460,000 U.S. clients employing nearly 26 million workers in the U.S., ADP said.
