USV Optical Inc., which makes eyeglasses under the name U.S. Vision, is planning to lay off nearly 300 workers at a Blackwood facility, according to a federal WARN notice filed with the state Department of Labor & Workforce Development.
USV, which is headquartered in a 72,000-square-foot facility in Camden County, said the layoffs of 299 workers could come by year-end. Jobs listed in the notice range from more than 100 production associates to lab support associates, maintenance and helpline workers, and more.
USV cited the pandemic as the reason for the layoffs: “COVID-19 restrictions and the economic downturn as many of its key customers are major retailers who are experiencing significantly reduced store hours, foot traffic and sales.”
The WARN notice described the layoffs under “termination of operations,” but it was unclear if the company would remain in business in some fashion.
USV Optical did not immediately return ROI-NJ’s request for comment.
WARN notices normally cover mass layoffs or facility closings as part of the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act of 1989.
