Sustainability-oriented news site, CivicStory, names executive director

A South Orange-based news website, CivicStory, has named its first executive director, it announced this week.

Josie Gonsalves took on her new role Dec. 1, as CivicStory concludes Phase 2 of the N.J. Sustainability Reporting Hub project, a statewide effort to amplify sustainability news and information.

“We’re thrilled that Josie Gonsalves will assume a leading role at this critical and challenging time,” founder Susan Haig said in a prepared statement. “Her broad skills in fundraising, management, community building and education will significantly increase our capacity and impact.”

CivicStory, founded in 2009 as NJ Arts News and renamed in 2015, is one of five independent, nonprofit news sites in the state, it said. Its Sustainability Reporting Hub supports six-month journalism fellowships in New Jersey newsrooms and aggregates sustainability news.

“I’m honored to be selected as CivicStory’s executive director,” Gonsalves said in a statement. “The mission to strengthen the civic purposes of news is deeply compelling, and I’m excited to join the board in this urgent work and journey.”

Gonsalves has served as a development consultants for nonprofits, and worked as a development executive for various organizations, including Newark Public Radio, Making Dreams Happen Inc. of Newark and others.
