Latin food market signs lease at Jersey City shopping center

A family-owned food market has signed a long-term lease at a Jersey City strip center, according to real estate firm Levin Management Corp.

The retail specialist said in a news release that Aqui Market had occupied the former Acme space at Twin City Shopping Center since 2011 as a subtenant, but now will be the direct tenant. The market, which Levin said offers food with a Latin flair, was founded in 1990 and has four New Jersey locations.

Aqui leases 24,500 square feet at the 95,000-square-foot center at the intersection of Garfield Avenue/Broadway and 53rd Street, North Plainfield-based LMC said.

“As an essential retail category — and one that has proven to be internet-resistant — grocery is a significant element for any shopping center,” LMC leasing representative E.J. Moawad, who arranged the lease, said in a prepared statement. “Aqui Market is a perfect match both for this neighborhood and Twin City Shopping Center, and we are pleased to have them remain a tenant here for many years to come.”

LMC is marketing other space at the center, ranging from 1,950 square feet to 14,000 square feet.
