In another big win for Bayonne, a massive UPS distribution center is coming to Lincoln Logistics Bayonne, the industrial park Lincoln Equities Group is building on the site of the former Military Ocean Terminal, the city said.
The facility will be just north of Port Terminal Boulevard, according to a site plan amendment submitted by Lincoln Equities. The 880,000-square-foot building would bring more than 1,000 jobs to what is known as MOTBY.
The news was first reported by Real Estate New Jersey.
The plan was hailed by Bayonne Mayor James Davis and U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.).
“When I first became mayor in 2014, the development of MOTBY and bringing jobs back to Bayonne were my top priorities,” Davis said. “This project with UPS helps me accomplish both, and is not only good for Bayonne, but for the entire region.”
Bayonne’s Harbor View Marketplace also has been a big success for Davis.
Menendez said the announcement is a big win for the Bayonne economy.
“This is a welcome addition to revitalization of the former MOTBY site and great news for Bayonne’s family,” he said. “I applaud Mayor Davis and his council for their continued leadership in attracting new, good-paying jobs and economic opportunities to the city.
The site continues to be a key to the city’s revitalization, Council President Sharon Ashe Nadwroski said.
“This project is part of the city’s overall goal of promoting balanced development within our city that not only benefits new developers and investors, but helps support the economy of the whole city,” she said.
The MOTBY site consists of 150 waterfront acres with direct access to global terminals, Newark Liberty International Airport and the New Jersey Turnpike. City officials say its redevelopment continues to be an economic driver in Hudson County.
The original site plan approved construction of 1.5 million square feet within four buildings (150,000-477,000 square feet). The site also has direct water with a wharf with roll-on roll-off capabilities that may permit UPS to create a water highway to New York City.
Assemblyman Nicholas Chiaravalloti (D-Bayonne), who served as the executive director of the city’s redevelopment agency to former Mayor Joseph Doria at the turn of the century, said he’s thrilled to see the progress.
“I always knew the potential benefits of MOTBY,” he said. “Today, as a resident and elected official, I can proudly say the addition of UPS to our city is a win for all of us.”
