BD acquires smart medication device company

BD, the Franklin Lakes-based medical technology maker, has acquired a company that develops smart medication devices, it announced Thursday.

The deal for GSL Solutions Inc. will expand medication management capabilities at BD, also known as Becton, Dickinson & Co. GSL’s products include standalone cabinets that provide secure storage for prescriptions and secured cabinets for controlled substances.

“This strategic acquisition provides innovative technologies for retail pharmacies and builds on recent acquisitions that have complemented our traditional hospital pharmacy-connected medication management solutions,” Mike Garrison, worldwide president of medication management solutions at BD, said in a prepared statement.

“Market consolidation, larger numbers of prescriptions written and changing regulations for controlled substances are intensifying the need for accurate, automated tracking of prescription medications and narcotics. This acquisition will help enable a new suite of BD products and services for retail and outpatient pharmacy customers to meet their current and future needs.”

Financial terms were not disclosed. GSL’s 20 full-time employees, headquartered in Vancouver, Washington, will join the BD staff.
