NEWMARKET Metuchen, a collaborative indoor/outdoor marketplace, announced its opening in the borough’s downtown. Founded by Joanne Cruz and J.C. Gomez-Peralta of Creative Twist Events, the co-op includes four permanent anchor shops owned and operated by local residents, and will welcome a variety of rotating pop-up shops. It aims to serve as a home for innovative small businesses in their first years of growth.
“J.C. and I believe that, together, local entrepreneurs can grow their businesses while delivering an extraordinary, enjoyable shopping experience for their local community,” Cruz said in a prepared statement. “We launched NEWMARKET as an innovative way to imagine retail space for ‘micropreneurs’ and diversity of products. Our goal is to help young entrepreneurs take their next big step — moving their business to a physical retail location within our marketplace — where they will run their own business and also benefit from the cooperative nature and collaborative efforts of all our entrepreneurs.”
In addition to Creative Twist Events, which offers party supplies and more, the anchors include FK Living, a design curator; love, june, a gift shop; and Sweet Roots Cakery, a custom cookies and sweets shop.
Local elements of the co-op extend to the design. Creative Twist Events hired the borough-based Metuchen Modern Design Workshop to design and build the displays for its marketplace, as well as other items for its parties and events brand.
NEWMARKET also includes space for special events, among other features.
