Atlantic Health System‘s Morristown Medical Center and Overlook Medical Center were the only hospitals in New Jersey to achieve the Healthgrades 2022 America’s 50 Best Hospitals Award. This is the third consecutive year both facilities received the distinction, and the seventh consecutive year Healthgrades has recognized Morristown for its consistent, year-over-year superior clinical performance.
This also marks the first year that measures data from the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic (2018 through 2020).
This distinction places both Morristown and Overlook among the top 1% of nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide.
“To achieve this consistent level of excellence for seven consecutive years reassures our communities that we are completely dedicated and focused on providing the highest quality standards, coordination of care, and the best possible patient outcomes,” said Trish O’Keefe, president of Morristown Medical Center. “We are especially proud of our dedicated medical staff and clinical team members, who consistently provide extraordinary care in a safe, healing environment for our patients and their loved ones, even through a pandemic that has stretched on for nearly two challenging years.”
“We are so proud to be recognized for quality, serving as a reminder of what makes us one of America’s best,” said Stephanie Schwartz, president of Overlook Medical Center. “We know that our team members provide extraordinary, high-quality care to our community, and this distinction exemplifies our dedication to safety and excellence. Certainly, the pandemic presented a myriad of challenges through which we endured and excelled by staying laser-focused on providing the very best care we can give.”
From 2018 through 2020, patients treated in hospitals achieving the Healthgrades America’s 50 Best Hospitals award, had, on average, a 21.7% lower risk of dying than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award, as measured across 19 rated conditions and procedures for which mortality is the outcome.
During that same period, if all hospitals performed similarly to those achieving the award, 157,292 lives could potentially have been saved. For example, patients treated for heart failure in hospitals achieving the Healthgrades America’s 50 Best Hospitals award, have, on average, a 25.5% lower risk of dying than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award.
“Being among America’s 50 Best Hospitals is the pinnacle achievement from Healthgrades,” said Dr. Brad Bowman, chief medical officer and head of data science at Healthgrades. “These hospitals are truly leading the nation and setting the standard for care delivery. We commend both Morristown and Overlook for their dedication to patient care and committing themselves to keeping their communities safe.”
Recipients of Healthgrades’ 50 Best Hospitals are recognized for overall clinical excellence and providing consistent, year-over-year, top-quality care across a broad spectrum of disease and surgical specialties.
