DoorDash extends gas rebate program for drivers through end of summer

Little things mean a lot in the business world. Of course, cash helps, too.

DoorDash’s efforts in both categories were evident last weekend, when the company announced it was continuing its Gas Rewards programs for drivers through the rest of the summer to help offset rising gas costs.

The program, which began in March, will now run through Aug. 31.

Here’s how the program works:

  • All dashers are eligible for 10% cash back on gas. DasherDirect, a prepaid business Visa debit card designed for Dashers, Dashers will soon be able to get 10% cash back on gas purchases — at any U.S. station — every time they use their card, even when they aren’t dashing.
  • DasherDirect is open to all U.S. Dashers. With no credit check required to apply, Dashers can start using a virtual card at digital checkout screens as soon as they’re approved.

In April, a company spokesperson estimated that DoorDash drivers in New Jersey received a rebate of 41 cents per gallon. And, to be clear, the rebate is for 10% of all gas purchased — whether it was specifically intended for DoorDash delivery or other purposes.

“Our goal is to ensure that we provide earning opportunities that remain accessible and viable for all and to keep the most money in Dashers’ pockets,” a company spokesperson said.

DoorDash hopes the incentive may lure new drivers.

Saying that it takes 13 weeks for the median unemployed person to find a job, DoorDash said working as a driver can serve as alternative employment. The company said many of those who join are eligible to work within a day of signing up.

The company said it feels its Gas Rewards program provides an additional incentive.

“At a time when so many are feeling the impact of heightened gas prices, we’re proud to offer flexible and valuable work opportunities with low barriers to entry,” the spokesperson said.
