People understand what construction is, and that it is a necessity. They see a plumber or electrician working on their home, an addition going up on a school or a group of craftworkers in a work zone widening a highway. Being able to break down what they already know and show them how many opportunities exist in the industry is where we need to meet them.
Union construction trades are progressive in attracting qualified applicants. In addition to traditional avenues, they work with community groups, government entities and school districts to share information about their programs.
The industry actively promotes construction career opportunities through a variety of paths.
Construction Industry Career Day is an outstanding example of labor and management working together to promote an industry. Supported by the unions, various trade associations and government agencies, the event started in 2001 and attracts about 3,000 people each year. The first day of this two-day event is open to the public. Career seekers, veterans, underemployed and unemployed are invited to explore the immediate openings available in the industry. High school students are invited to attend the second day, escorted by their guidance counselors and teachers as part of school groups, to learn about the rewarding career paths. The event offers hands-on exhibits that showcase the many professions that make up the industry. Attendees will learn about the salaries, benefits, stackable credentials and educational opportunities. Parents and guardians are encouraged to join us so they can become aware of the diverse construction career paths for their children.
CICD 2022 is May 31 (open to the public) and June 1 (high school groups only).
