N.J. awarded more than $177M to revitalize neighborhoods (here’s where money is going)

U.S. Sens. Bob Menendez and Cory Booker announced Monday the awarding of a combined $177,768,593 in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Office of Community Planning and Development to support the revitalization of communities across New Jersey.

“Families in all ZIP codes deserve safe, affordable and high-quality housing and opportunities to succeed,” Menendez (D-N.J.) said. “As we continue the recovery process from the COVID-19 pandemic, it is critical that we continue to provide the support New Jersey’s communities and families need to rebuild. This funding is an integral part of that effort.”

Booker (D-N.J.) said the grants can have real impact.

“Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, disadvantaged communities across New Jersey were struggling — a fact that has only been exacerbated by the health crisis,” he said.  “This federal funding is vital to ensuring that these communities can recover and provide residents safe, affordable places to live.”

The funding announced Monday comes from four different grants designed to revitalize struggling neighborhoods and expand access to affordable housing, including:

  • CDBG: Community Development Block Grant;
  • RHP: CDBG Recovery Housing Program;
