3 N.J. companies in Top 12 of Best Corporate Citizens ranking

Four New Jersey-based companies placed on the Top 100 Best Corporate Citizens of 2022, a ranking based on corporate leadership on environmental, social and governance issues.

The list was produced by 3BL Media.

Using a methodology developed by 3BL Media, all Russell 1000 index companies are researched by ISS ESG, the responsible investment research arm of Institutional Shareholder Services. There is no fee for companies to be included in the 100 Best Corporate Citizens.

As companies decarbonize, align with sustainable development goals and rebuild an equitable economy post-pandemic, they must be open about their efforts, the leaders of the rankings said.

The list was headed by Owens Corning, Pepsi and Apple. (See the complete list here.)

Here is how the N.J. companies fared:

  • No. 6: Merck (Kenilworth)
  • No. 8: Public Service Enterprise Group (Newark)
  • No. 12: Johnson & Johnson (New Brunswick)
  • No. 83: Verizon (Basking Ridge)

Public Service Enterprise Group, which is on a path toward net-zero carbon emissions by 2030 while embracing the diverse communities and people it impacts daily, said it was thrilled to be recognized.

“We are honored to receive this recognition for our achievements in ESG and sustainability, but we are far from done on this journey,” PSEG Chair and CEO Ralph Izzo said. “As corporate citizens, we have an ongoing responsibility to stand up for the equitable treatment of our employees, our customers, our communities and our planet.

“My overarching goal is that we continue to build on our accomplishments as we focus on being a positive force in a changing world.”

A number of companies that are not based in New Jersey but have a large corporate presence also made the list, including:

  • CVS Health (No. 18);
  • Hess (No. 38);
  • JLL (No. 40);
  • Pfizer (No. 59);
  • Bristol-Myers Squibb (No. 67);
  • CBRE (No. 76);
  • AvalonBay (No. 92).
