Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, an RWJBarnabas Health facility, has named Dr. Smruti Mohanty the new division director of gastroenterology, where he will oversee the clinical care, evaluation and management of adults with gastrointestinal and liver diseases.
Mohanty brings to the position over 20 years of expertise and practice in gastroenterology and hepatology, including specialization in liver disease and liver transplant.

Prior to joining Newark Beth Israel, Mohanty served as the chief, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatobiliary Disease and director, Center for Liver Disease, at New York Presbyterian-Brooklyn Methodist Hospital in New York, where he worked with the team to establish inpatient hepatology consult services and a hepatology outpatient ambulatory clinic. He also served as assistant professor of medicine, Section of Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition, at the University of Chicago, where he played a pivotal role in the hospital’s nationally ranked liver disease and liver transplant program.
