Newark Beth Israel Medical Center names new director of gastroenterology

Dr. Smruti Mohanty to serve as new division director 

Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, an RWJBarnabas Health facility, has named Dr. Smruti Mohanty the new division director of gastroenterology, where he will oversee the clinical care, evaluation and management of adults with gastrointestinal and liver diseases.

Mohanty brings to the position over 20 years of expertise and practice in gastroenterology and hepatology, including specialization in liver disease and liver transplant.

“Dr. Mohanty is an exceptional leader in gastroenterology and liver diseases, and we are proud to welcome him to Newark Beth Israel Medical Center,” Darrell Terry, CEO and president, Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and Children’s Hospital of New Jersey, stated. “His extensive experience and clinical expertise in gastrointestinal and liver diseases as well as his research in racial disparities in liver disease make him uniquely qualified for this role. Prior to joining Newark Beth Israel, Mohanty served as the chief, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatobiliary Disease and director, Center for Liver Disease, at New York Presbyterian-Brooklyn Methodist Hospital in New York, where he worked with the team to establish inpatient hepatology consult services and a hepatology outpatient ambulatory clinic. He also served as assistant professor of medicine, Section of Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition, at the University of Chicago, where he played a pivotal role in the hospital’s nationally ranked liver disease and liver transplant program.
