Invest Newark announces new appointments for general counsel, chief innovation economy officer & director of broadband

Invest Newark on Monday said it appointed two individuals, Jeet Gulati and Aaron Meyerson, to serve as its general counsel and chief innovation economy officer and director of broadband, respectively.

The new appointments will improve internal processes, enhance efficiency and further support the organization’s innovative programming and operations.

“As we grow our reach as an organization, we are building our leadership team with top experts that will continue to strengthen our services to and relationship with Newark communities,” Marcus Randolph, CEO and president of Invest Newark, said. “Jeet and Aaron’s experiences throughout their respective careers make them incredible assets to our work, and we’re excited for their effort and expertise.”

Gulati joined Invest Newark as its general counsel in October. Prior to his position at Invest Newark, Gulati represented financial institutions as well as for-profit and nonprofit real estate developer-owners with financing public-private partnerships and with administrative agency-facing transactions as an attorney with Windels Marx Lane & Mittendorf LLP.

Before joining Windels Marx in 2019, Gulati was a deputy attorney general in the New Jersey Division of Law, where he focused on real estate and public finance transactions. Before the Division of Law, Gulati was an assistant general counsel at the New York City Housing Development Corp., where he represented the agency in financing the new construction or preservation of over 2,000 units of affordable housing in New York City.

Aaron Meyerson.

Meyerson will serve as the chief innovation economy officer and director of broadband for the city of Newark. He will be supporting the Newark Fiber initiative to bring broadband to all Newark residents, along with attracting, retaining and expanding high-growth businesses in Newark.

Prior to joining Invest Newark, Meyerson served as the deputy chief technology officer for broadband for the city of New York. He led the implementation of New York City’s Internet Master Plan, a program to build publicly owned, privately run broadband, increase competition and leverage city real estate to bridge the digital divide. He also managed New York City’s digital equity and inclusion work along with the city’s broadband data analysis and mapping team. Previously, Meyerson served as founding employee and senior director of operations for WiredScore, a venture-backed global broadband and real estate technology company. Prior to WiredScore, Meyerson served as assistant vice president of the New York City Economic Development Corp.’s strategic planning team, leading broadband, resiliency and economic development initiatives, including serving on Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s Special Initiative for Resiliency and Rebuilding after Hurricane Sandy.

“In appointing Aaron Meyerson as chief innovation economy officer and director of broadband for the city of Newark, Invest Newark has chosen an outstanding and experienced leader,” Newark Mayor Ras Baraka said. “He represents the excellence that defines our city. Mr. Meyerson will lead our collective effort to bring Newark Fiber and free or low-cost broadband to all residents of Newark, regardless of their income or neighborhood they live in, which is critical to the lives of its residents, now and in the future.”
