N.J. American Water names Stephen Bishop vice president, general counsel

New Jersey American Water recently announced that Stephen Bishop has been named vice president, general counsel and secretary. Bishop replaces Debbie Albrecht, who was promoted to vice president, chief rates and regulatory counsel, for American Water.

In this role, Bishop will provide legal counsel and representation for New Jersey American Water. He will also be responsible for directing and overseeing the strategic and day-to-day legal services that support state-regulated operations.

“Stephen has the experience and determination to lead our legal team,” Mark McDonough, president, New Jersey American Water, said. “His extensive background in legal counsel, with over 15 years within the water industry, continues to be a valuable resource to our company.”

Bishop has over 25 years of experience in legal counsel. Prior to his current role, he served as corporate counsel for American Water Enterprises and senior director of corporate counsel for American Water’s Eastern Division, which includes regulated operations in New Jersey, Virginia and Maryland. As senior director, Bishop provided strategic guidance on rate and regulatory matters, property and asset purchase agreements, legislation and other regulatory proceedings, and corporate governance and internal control policies. Most recently, Bishop added deputy general counsel for New Jersey American Water to his existing responsibilities. Prior to joining American Water in 2008, he was member at Cozen O’Connor in Philadelphia.

Bishop holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hamilton College and a Juris Doctor degree from Villanova University School of Law.
