New Jersey hospitals ranked No. 1 in the country for the percentage of hospitals that received an “A” grade (51%) in the semiannual Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades, released Wednesday morning.
An impressive 77% of New Jersey hospitals received an “A” or “B” grade, while 22% received a “C” grade. No hospitals were given a “D” or “F” grade.
New Jersey also is the only state in the nation with 100% participation in the voluntary hospital safety survey. Leapfrog was not able to assign a Safety Grade to two hospitals, Salem Medical Center and Bergen New Bridge Medical Center, because all of the required data was not available.
“New Jersey hospitals deserve our praise for their commitment to participating in Leapfrog’s voluntary safety survey, and also for their high scores,” Linda Schwimmer, CEO and president of the New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute said.
While the scores were better — New Jersey was No. 6 overall last fall — there still is plenty of room for improvement, Leapfrog officials said.
New Jersey mirrored the nation with a spike in hospital-acquired infections, including Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) and catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI).
These hospital-acquired infections rose to a five-year high in hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic and remain high nationwide, according to the Leapfrog Group.
“The rise in hospital-acquired infections shows us that the work of advancing patient safety requires a continued, unrelenting effort,” Schwimmer said. “We hope to see New Jersey hospitals double down on their focused efforts to reduce hospital-acquired infections.”
