American Association of University Women of N.J. announces new executive committee

2023-2024 state officers elected or appointed at 2023 annual meeting

The New Jersey State Affiliate of the American Association of University Women, a statewide women’s rights activist organization consisting of over a 1,000 dedicated members committed to the fight for equality, recently announced its slate of officers for the coming year, effective July 1.

On April 29, AAUW NJ held its annual meeting virtually. Representatives from the 20 local branches voted to elect officers for the positions that were up for election and appoint others to fill vacant positions for the 2023-2024 term. The newly formed executive committee consists of the following:

  • President: Sharon Suber;
  • Communication vice president: Anjali Mehrotra;
  • Program vice president: Karen Kaplan;
  • Membership vice president: Diane Crawford;
  • Treasurer: Karen Brown;
  • Secretary: Jenny Starks;
  • Northern District coordinator: Diane Crawford;
  • Central District coordinator: Jackie McGuinness;
  • Southern District coordinator: Lorraine LaPalomento.

“It is an honor to be chosen to serve as president of AAUW of New Jersey,” Suber said. “AAUW is committed to fighting the startling inequalities that persist in education, to close the pay gap and ensure that workplaces embrace diversity & inclusion, and fight for equal representation for women in the upper levels of management. I look forward to working with the new executive committee and the entire board of directors to sponsor mission-driven initiatives in the Garden State. Through scholarships for women attending college and programs to advance STEM education among middle and high school girls, our local branches have been actively supporting women’s education for over 100 years in the state. We will continue using our platform to call for reducing disparities in education and ensuring pay equity.”

The American Association of University Women advances gender equity for women and girls through research, education and advocacy. The nonpartisan, nonprofit organization has more than 170,000 members and supporters across the U.S., as well as 1,000 local branches and more than 800 college and university members. AAUW of New Jersey is the state affiliate representing approximately 1,200 members in 20 branches throughout New Jersey.
