East Orange Housing Authority celebrates completion of 60 affordable homes for seniors

Sixty new affordable and vibrant homes for seniors are now open in East Orange. Genesis Cos., East Orange Housing Authority and the Metro Co. were joined by East Orange Mayor Ted Green to celebrate the ribbon-cutting of Ted R. Green Senior Residences project.

The building is named after Green, who served as an EOHA board member for more than a decade before his election as mayor. Under his leadership, the funding and support for this project was made possible.

“East Orange’s seniors deserve a good quality of life and a vibrant place to call home, and these new affordable apartments with wraparound services are an incredible source of pride for our community,” Green said. “I am humbled and honored to have this building bear my name, as I have always been a strong advocate for quality affordable housing for everyone, but especially the most vulnerable among us. Thank you to Genesis Cos. and the East Orange Housing Authority for helping to reinvest in the people of East Orange.”

Following a groundbreaking in 2021, Genesis Cos., fellow co-developer the Metro Co. and the East Orange Housing Authority completed the 60-unit, 61,000-square-foot senior supportive housing building in the spring. Residents began moving into their new homes, which are 100% affordable, earlier this year. Of the 60 units, 15 are set aside for people who have experienced homelessness and who can access supportive services.

“There is an urgent need for quality and affordable residences for low- and moderate-income seniors and disabled residents in New Jersey. The Ted R. Green senior apartments provide a new, and affordable senior housing facility with amenities that offer a higher quality of living for all its residents,” Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver said.

“Supporting our senior community members is an essential part of how we build strong, sustainable neighborhoods, which is why we’re extremely proud to stand with the East Orange community today,” Nicole Lockett, Genesis Cos. managing director, said. “This project is a testament to what we can accomplish together through meaningful public-private partnerships where we work together to solve our community’s housing challenges.”

The Ted R. Green Senior Residences project is part of the Service for Independent Living program. Supportive services for residents are provided through Bridgeway Rehabilitation Services and the housing authority’s existing programs.

The project was financed with support from Citibank, Bank of America, National Equity Fund LIHTC Equity, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and Federal Home Loan Bank AHP Grant.
