Legend of the Meadlowlands
Govs. William Cahill and Brendan Byrne
Cahill, a former congressman, and Byrne, a former judge and the first leader of the Board of Public Utilities, were instrumental in forming the Meadowlands region as we know it today, with the Meadowlands Sports Complex as an economic driver and the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission as an environmental custodian and planning organization. Both conceived in Cahill’s administration (1970-74) and executed in Byrne’s (1974-1982), the agencies were ultimately joined in 2015.
