As a boxer, he compiled a professional record of 31 wins (11 by way of knockout) and 7 losses in 38 fights — against notable opponents such as Jimmy Young, Jerry Quarry and Bayonne’s own, Chuck Wepner. He continued his ring career as a referee, working more than 50 title fights, including bouts featuring Mike Tyson, Wladimir Klitschko and Evander Holyfield. He is in the Boxing Hall of Fame.
