McCarter boosts government affairs presence in Connecticut with hiring of Mauro

In a move that strengthens an already-strong government affairs practice in the region, McCarter & English announced Monday that it has hired Vin Mauro Jr., the longtime chief of staff for the Senate Democrats in Connecticut, as a government affairs adviser.

Mauro, who began at the firm last week, will work out of the firm’s Hartford office.

Mauro will be part of a McCarter government affairs team led by Guillermo Artiles, the chair and former associate counsel to Gov. Phil Murphy, and Bill Palatucci, the state’s longtime Republican national committeeman.

“Adding Vin to our team and the firm is a game-changer,” Artiles said. “Nationally recognized as a powerbroker with deep knowledge of the workings of government, he also expands our mid-Atlantic footprint. Vin has a track record of developing policy, high-level negotiations and reaching across political lines to achieve successful outcomes.”

Mauro began his tenure with Connecticut’s Senate Democrats in 1996 as a legislative aide to Martin Looney before taking a three-year hiatus to earn his J.D. at Quinnipiac University School of Law in 2002. He worked as special counsel to the Senate majority leader from 2003 to 2014 before being named chief of staff in 2015.

Mauro said he is eager for the next challenge.

“After nearly three decades of state service, I look forward to this new chapter in my career in private practice as a member of McCarter’s highly regarded government affairs team,” he said. “The firm is truly a one-of-a-kind, well-established ‘one-stop shop’ for businesses at any stage of their development, able to advance their interests on the local, state, national or global level. I am excited to leverage my political capital to drive meaningful continued growth for McCarter and its clients.”

McCarter’s Government Affairs Group is one of the tops in the country. Many members of the team have worked for current and former U.S. presidents, held high-level posts in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, and, like Mauro, have served in state and local government. The team services clients across a broad range of industries including health care, cannabis, food and beverage, real estate, transportation, telecom, manufacturing and renewable energy sectors.

Palatucci said Mauro is a great addition.

“Vin is a prominent power player with a well-deserved reputation for working on both sides of the aisle and skillfully resolving the most challenging personal and political differences with nuanced, effective negotiating,” he said. “Clients across industries and jurisdictions will benefit from Vin’s thoughtful leadership and invaluable counsel.”
