New director of breast surgery joins Jersey City Medical Center

Jersey City Medical Center, an RWJBarnabas Health facility, has appointed Dr. Rebecca Yang to the position of director of breast surgery. She will also serve as the director of the Comprehensive Breast Health Center at Jersey City Medical Center.

The Comprehensive Breast Health Center, with its multidisciplinary approach, brings together the latest in diagnostic and treatment options for women in Hudson County and beyond.

In partnership with Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, the state’s only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, Yang will provide patients access to the most advanced treatment options, including clinical trials and novel therapeutics such as precision medicine and immunotherapy — many of which are not available at other facilities across the state.

“We are excited to welcome Dr. Yang to these roles, as she brings an extensive background and expertise in breast surgery and clinical leadership,” Michael Prilutsky, CEO and president of Jersey City Medical Center and interim CEO and president, RWJBarnabas Health Medical Group, said. “Under her leadership, our Comprehensive Breast Health Center will serve as a destination for exceptional breast health services in Hudson County.”

Yang, an RWJBarnabas Health Medical Group provider, will see patients at 116 Newark Ave., 2nd floor, Jersey City, and at 59 Newark St., Hoboken. She focuses exclusively on malignant and benign breast disease with a comprehensive patient-centered approach. She has expertise in advanced surgical procedures, including sentinel lymph node biopsies and nipple sparing mastectomies. Yang has a strong interest in the role of integrative therapy in the management and subsequent survivorship care planning for those with a diagnosis of breast cancer. She is a proponent of advancing care through participation in appropriate clinical trials and her areas of interest include breast conserving surgery, hidden scar surgical techniques, de-escalation of surgical management when appropriate, dance/movement therapy as part of breast surgery recovery and lymphedema screening, prevention and management.

Yang is board certified in surgery. Before her appointment at Jersey City Medical Center, she was medical director, breast surgery, at Overlook Medical Center. She also held a prior role as medical director, Breast Center, Lahey Clinic Outpatient Center in Danvers, Massachusetts, as well as academic appointments at Tufts University School of Medicine and Dartmouth Medical School.
