Atlantic City’s total gaming revenue grew solidly in March, with year-over-year increases both online and on the casino floor, according to Tuesday figures released by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement. Total gaming revenue reported by casinos, racetracks and their partners was $526.6 million for March, reflecting an 8.1% increase from totals reported in March 2023. For year-to-date, total gaming revenue reported by casinos, racetracks and their partners was $1.55 billion, reflecting a 15.7% increase from $1.34 billion reported in the prior year-to-date period.
Internet gaming win set a monthly record for the month of March at $197.2 million, reflecting growth of 19% when compared with $165.7 million reported in March 2023. For the year-to-date period, internet gaming win reported by casinos and their partners was $562.8 million, reflecting growth of 22% when compared with $461.2 million for the prior year-to-date period.
Casino win results remained stable as Atlantic City enjoyed its best March result in 12 years. Casino win for the nine casino hotel properties was $239.8 million for March, reflecting an increase of 4.9% when compared with $228.6 million reported in March 2023. Year-to-date casino win for the nine casino hotel properties was $656.1 million, an increase of 0.1% compared with $655.3 million for the prior year-to-date period.
“The casino hotels have been busy adding excellent amenities and memorable in-person experiences that create synergy between online and traditional gaming,” New Jersey Casino Control Commission Chairman James Plousis said. “Online gamers have unique opportunities to enjoy the diverse experiences of a destination resort in Atlantic City.”
“Total gross gaming set a new near-term high for March monthly revenue, and brick-and-mortar revenues for the month increased nearly 5% over March 2023 and were the best seen for any March since 2012,” Jane Bokunewicz, faculty director of the Lloyd D. Levenson Institute of Gaming, Hospitality and Tourism, Stockton University School of Business, said.
Sports wagering gross revenue reported by casinos, racetracks and their partners was $89.7 million for March, reflecting a 3.6% decrease when compared with $93 million reported in March 2023. Sports wagering gross revenue reported by casinos, racetracks and their partners was $328 million for the year-to-date period, reflecting a 49.1% increase when compared with the $220 million reported in the prior year-to-date period.
“Despite the near-record-high sports wagering handle for the month, Atlantic City’s sportsbooks fell 33% short of last March, but still improved over 2023 for the year-to-date by nearly 39%. Internet gaming, up 19% over March 2023 and a new record high for single-month revenue, likely indirectly benefited from increased online gaming activity around the ‘March Madness’ of the Men’s and Women’s NCAA Basketball Championship Tournaments, as patrons may have sampled online casino offerings while waiting for the results of the games,” Bokunewicz said.
