Private-sector employment rose again in April, as the average pace of hiring accelerated over the last three months after slowing late last year, almost matching gains made in the first half of 2023. Employment rose by 192,000 jobs last month and annual pay was up 5%, according to the most recent ADP National Employment Report, released Wednesday.
“Hiring was broad-based in April,” Nela Richardson, chief economist, ADP, said. “Only the information sector — telecommunications, media and information technology — showed weakness, posting job losses and the smallest pace of pay gains since August 2021.”
When looking at where the jobs surfaced, the service-providing sector saw the biggest increases, with leisure/hospitality adding 56,000 positions and trade/transportation/utilities adding 26,000; education/health services was up 26,000 and professional/business services increased by 22,000.
Large-sized establishments, those with 500 or more employees, experienced the largest bump in additions, with 98,000 jobs added.
