Sunrise ShopRite, the family-owned company that operates ShopRite stores in Parsippany and West Caldwell, will host a groundbreaking ceremony at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday for a much-anticipated state-of-the-art store at 900 Bloomfield Ave. in West Caldwell.
Construction is expected to be completed in fall 2025. The new store will replace the current ShopRite of West Caldwell at 540 Passaic Ave., which opened in 1967.
Encompassing nearly 90,000 square feet, the new ShopRite of West Caldwell will be nearly twice the size of the existing store and offer customers a state-of-the-art space, expanded produce, meat and seafood departments and a wide variety of prepared, ready-to-eat and ready-to-heat gourmet meals crafted by trained chefs, Sunrise ShopRite officials said.
The supermarket also will include a wine and spirits department.
Sunrise ShopRite’s local roots date back to 1940, when Nathan Gladstein opened his first small food store, Sunrise Market, in Caldwell. Irving Gladstein, Nathan’s son, took over the business after his father’s passing in 1948. Irving Gladstein joined the supermarket cooperative Wakefern Food Corp. in 1951 and transitioned his Sunrise Market to ShopRite.
The current West Caldwell ShopRite store opened in 1967, and, in 1980, Irving’s son Ned expanded the business with the first Parsippany ShopRite location. Today, Dara Sblendorio, Ned Gladstein’s daughter, serves as president of Sunrise ShopRite, representing the fourth generation of the grocery family.
