Paul Mazer, an accomplished employment and labor attorney who previously worked at Genova Burns LLC, is returning to the Newark-based firm as a partner, it announced this week.
Genova Burns also announced the arrival of Marasia Laster as an associate.
Mazer brings a wealth of experience in employment and labor law, having previously served as assistant general counsel for Prime Healthcare, the fifth-largest for-profit health care system in the country.
In that role, Mazer provided legal guidance for a workforce of over 50,000 employees. His role involved representing hospitals in arbitration, negotiating collective bargaining agreements and advising on union activities.
Earlier in his career, at Genova Burns, Mazer developed strategies for labor arbitrations, defended employers in National Labor Relations Board hearings and offered comprehensive human resources counseling. His expertise spans both the private sector and in-house roles, including a tenure as division counsel for an international facility management company and operating his own legal practice focused on employment law.
Genova Burns Managing Partner James Burns was delighted to make the announcement.
“We are thrilled to welcome Paul back to Genova Burns LLC,” he said. “Paul was and is an asset to the firm. It is great to have a partner that can hit the ground running.”
Mazer’s early career included defending employers in litigation and compliance advising. He began as a judicial intern for the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey and as a board agent intern for the NLRB. He holds a Juris Doctorate from Seton Hall University School of Law and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Wisconsin at Madison.
Laster, a graduate of Rutgers Law School, brings a strong background in corporate law.
Prior to joining the firm, Laster represented clients in complex transactions, including mergers & acquisitions, financing and joint ventures. Her experience includes drafting commercial agreements and managing transaction processes, showcasing her ability to handle intricate legal matters.
Laster’s legal journey includes serving as a judicial law clerk for the Hon. Daniel Roberts of the Superior Court of Union County and contributing to the Rutgers Community and Transactional Lawyering Clinic. An active community member, she previously served on the Hackensack planning board.
“Genova Burns has always been known for fostering young talent,” Chairman Angelo Genova said. “We look forward to watching Ms. Laster grow as an attorney.”
