NJ Bankers hosting financial literacy workshop for veterans on Wednesday in Forked River

The New Jersey Bankers Association and Manasquan Bank will team to host a free financial literacy class for military veterans Wednesday at the Backwards Flag Brewing Co. in Forked River.

The event, which will run from 6-7:30 p.m., will be at 699 Challenger Way.

“Working with Manasquan Bank, we will cover the basics, from opening a checking and savings account, but we will go way beyond that,” NJ Bankers Vice President John Mangini said. “We will discuss important financial activities and issues — such as saving for financial emergencies, ways to increase wealth, ways out of debt and how to make sure your accounts are secure so you can avoid scams.”

Mangini said veterans who attend would be able to follow up with representatives from Manasquan Bank or their own bank as they begin to implement their financial plans.

“This is about helping veterans make their money work better for them,” explained Frank Luna, who served in the National Guard and works with many local organizations helping veterans. “This is incredibly important, because most people who leave the military are still young and, generally, the younger demographic doesn’t naturally think about financial planning.”

Luna said the impact of financial literacy is far-reaching.

“Mental health and physical health are very important for our veterans,” Luna continued, “but so is financial health. If our efforts help one veteran feel more financially secure, then it was worth every ounce of our effort.”

All New Jersey veterans are welcome to attend the complimentary workshop.
