U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone has secured $1.1 million in community project funding for critical water treatment upgrades at Perth Amboy’s Runyon Water Treatment Plant. The new federal funding will address emerging contaminants and ensure continued access to clean drinking water for the city’s 55,000 residents.
The Runyon WTP, which processes up to 8 million gallons per day of water, serves as a vital source of clean drinking water for Perth Amboy, which, like many communities, is facing challenges from contaminants.
“The funding I’ve secured is crucial to safeguarding public health and ensuring the long-term sustainability of Perth Amboy’s drinking water supply,” Pallone (D-6th Dist.) said. “By investing in these upgrades, we’re not only protecting our community’s water quality, but also laying the foundation for a safer, healthier environment for generations to come.”
The interim treatment project will focus on enhancing the plant’s ability to effectively treat water from emerging contaminants. This includes exploring partial treatment options and targeting specific treatment processes to address the most pressing concerns identified by environmental experts and regulators.
“I am delighted that Congressman Pallone Jr. has announced $1.1 million for the Runyon Water Treatment Plant in the appropriations bill. This crucial funding will help us build a new water treatment facility to continue providing clean and safe water for Perth Amboy. His dedication to securing this funding is a significant win, ensuring a healthier future for our city. Thank you, Congressman Pallone Jr., for your continued commitment to Perth Amboy residents,” Mayor Helmin J. Caba said.
The project is part of a comprehensive overhaul of Perth Amboy’s water treatment infrastructure, as outlined in the state of New Jersey’s Clean Water Intended Use Plan.
The funding for this project was requested by Pallone in the Fiscal Year 2025 annual spending bill. Each year, members of the U.S. House may request community funding projects in their district to direct federal resources toward the biggest needs in their communities.
