HUMC ranked nationally in 8 specialty hospital categories, including cancer

John Theurer Cancer Center ranked as best in state, Top 50 in country

Hackensack Meridian Health earned a unique triple crown in the U.S. News & World Report specialty hospital rankings announced Tuesday morning, as the system was judged to have the top adult hospital, top children’s hospital and the top cancer center in the state.

Hackensack Meridian Hackensack University Medical Center was honored as the top adult hospital in the state, while Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shore University Medical Center was selected as having the top children’s hospital. The Hackensack Meridian John Theurer Cancer Center was ranked as the best cancer center in New Jersey and among the Top 50 cancer centers in the nation.

HMH CEO Bob Garrett obviously was proud of the recognition.

“As New Jersey’s largest health network, we are committed to providing patients with the highest-quality, life-changing care,” he said. “This recognition underscores the dedication of our world-class team members who work tirelessly to provide exceptional, compassionate care year after year.”

HUMC earned national rankings in eight specialties:

  • Urology: No. 17
  • Pulmonology and lung surgery: No. 22
  • Neurology and neurosurgery: No. 23
  • Orthopedics: No. 25
  • Diabetes and endocrinology: No. 25
  • Geriatrics: No. 34
  • Cardiology, heart and vascular surgery: No. 41
  • Cancer: No. 44

Morristown Medical Center, which was ranked No. 2 overall in the state for the second consecutive year, was ranked nationally in four specialties:

  • Orthopedics: No. 16
  • Urology: No. 31
  • Gastroenterology and GI surgery: No. 44
  • Cardiology, heart and vascular surgery: No. 49

The No. 16 ranking for orthopedics was the highest individual specialty ranking in the state.

Morristown Medical Center President Trish O’Keefe certainly was thrilled.

Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune was the only other hospital to receive a national ranking, coming in at No. 35 for Obstetrics & gynecology.

Two rehabilitation hospitals in the state were ranked nationally:

  • Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation (West Orange): No. 4
  • JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute (HMH-Edison): No. 33
