The New Jersey labor market was steady in June, as total employment dipped a mere 1,200 jobs from May, to a seasonally adjusted total of 4.388 million jobs. The unemployment rate also held steady, at 4.6%.
According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job gain in May from April was adjusted downward, to 12,300 from the estimated 16,500. The unemployment rate remained unchanged from the estimate.
For June, three of the nine private industry sectors recorded increases: professional and business services, at 500 jobs gained; education and health services, at 300 jobs; and trade, transportation and utilities, also at 300 jobs. Five sectors recorded declines: leisure and hospitality, at 2,100 jobs lost; financial activities, at -1,200 jobs; manufacturing, at -300 jobs; other services, also at -300 jobs; and information, at -100 jobs. Construction jobs were flat for the month.
Public-sector jobs grew by 1,700 positions for the month.
Over the past 12 months, New Jersey has added 58,300 nonfarm jobs overall, with approximately 80% of the gains in the private sector.
