William Paterson University has been chosen for a grant from the Mexican government that will provide scholarships to students from Mexico or of Mexican origin, it announced Monday.
The award, which will benefit undergraduate and graduate students in 2024, was given by the Consulate of Mexico, at its newly established office in New Brunswick.
Wayne-based William Paterson will benefit from the Mexican government’s IME Becas grant program, which funds higher education or adult education for Mexican students abroad.Through the new program, the university will match the consulate’s award, doubling the amount of money available.
William Paterson is designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution, demonstrating its commitment to Hispanic students and immigrants.
“As a proud HIS, William Paterson University is dedicated to fostering diversity, equity & inclusion within our campus community and beyond,” George Kacenga, vice president for enrollment management, said in a prepared statement. “Our commitment to educational access and empowerment extends to the Mexican community, reflecting our values of social responsibility and community engagement.
“The IME Becas grant will create an opportunity to further support the existing community, while also serving as a resource to attract and support students from Mexico.”
