AtlantiCare names McDonnell to newly created position of chief hospital executive

Kevin McDonnell has been named chief hospital executive at AtlantiCare, the organization announced this week.

In the newly created role, McDonnell will lead AtlantiCare’s Hospital Campuses, through the oversight of strategic planning for acute care services, clinical and professional performance, quality, patient safety, medical and clinical education, and system growth and development.

He will report to CEO Michael Charlton.

McDonnell joins AtlantiCare from RWJBarnabas Health Medical Group where he most recently served as the vice president of Medical Services Organization, managing the operations of medical group practices and provider groups. His achievements include developing standardized operating models, increasing access and productivity, implementing cost-saving measures, and leading the operational integration of medical group practices and new providers.

Throughout his nearly 40-year career in health care operations, McDonnell has amassed extensive expertise and has a proven track record of achievements in strategic planning, operational oversight, financial management, and executive leadership.

For McDonell, the announcement means he’ll return to one of the stops along his nearly four-decade career in health care.

“I am thrilled to welcome Kevin back to AtlantiCare,” Charlton said. “He brings an exceptional blend of experience, leadership, and a proven track record of driving growth and operational excellence. I know he will be a tremendous asset in our efforts to advance VISION 2030 and deliver outstanding care to our community.”

During his career, McDonnell has held various leadership positions in hospitals and healthcare, including roles at Virtua Health and AtlantiCare. Most notably, in his role as chief operating officer of AtlantiCare Physician Group, he was instrumental in the establishment of AtlantiCare Physician Group and AtlantiCare Urgent Care.

McDonnell said he’s eager for the opportunity.

“I am truly excited to return to AtlantiCare and rejoin this exceptional team,” he said. “AtlantiCare’s VISION 2030 initiative to transform healthcare delivery is incredibly inspiring, and I am eager to contribute to this bold vision and make a significant impact.”
