Murphy set to name former chief of staff, George Helmy, to fill Menendez’s Senate seat

George Helmy, Gov. Phil Murphy’s former chief of staff, is expected to be named to fill the
U.S. Senate seat that Sen. Bob Menendez will vacate next week, multiple New Jersey media outlets reported Thursday.

Menendez will officially resign Aug. 20. U.S. Rep. Andy Kim (D-3rd Dist.), who is running for Menendez’s Senate seat for the full term, was not considered for the position, according to the New Jersey Globe, which first broke the news.

Helmy most recently has worked as executive vice president and head of external affairs for RWJBarnabas Health.

The seat for the full term starting in January will be filled by the winner of the November election between Kim and Republican Curtis Bashaw.
