Students 2 Science names Walker as new chair, appoints 7 new trustees

Students 2 Science, a North Jersey 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that aims to inspire and empower students from communities in need through experiential learning to pursue careers in STEM, recently announced a new chair and seven new trustees.

Karnel Walker, an executive director at Thermo Fisher Scientific, was selected as the new board chair.

Officials at Students 2 Science, which has centers in East Hanover and Newark, said each new trustee brings an extensive breadth of knowledge and experiences in a wide variety of fields, as well as a passion for and commitment to science, technology, engineering and math education.

They come from some of the biggest and most influential companies in the state.

The new trustees:

  • John Dempsey, CEO, Bluepoint Wind
  • Donovan Hawse, vice president – finance, Cencora Business Services
  • Sasha Del Valle-George, executive director, human resources, WW Commercialization, Bristol Myers Squibb
  • Dr. Lois Greene, senior vice president for wellness, diversity and equity, University Hospital
  • Roy Helmy, associate vice president, PDMB Regulated BA, Merck
  • Christine Richards, head of North America Learning Experience, Sanofi U.S.
  • Charlotte Rocker, executive director, product strategy, malignant hematology/U.S. general management, Novartis

Walker said she is eager to begin her new role.

“I am thrilled to take on the role of Chair for Students 2 Science, an organization deeply committed to fostering diversity & inclusion in STEM,” she said. “I’m truly inspired to embark on an ambitious path with an amazingly talented board that includes program expansion, more technology centers and curriculum development to meet future workforce needs in the state of New Jersey.

“With the addition of seven valuable members to our board, it further enhances our capacity to serve more students. I eagerly anticipate the progress we’ll make in demystifying STEM and paving the way for a more equitable future.”

Students 2 Science co-founder and President Paul Winslow said the organization is thrilled.

“We have worked diligently to ensure Students 2 Science’s board of trustees represent diverse backgrounds, experiences and areas of expertise,” he said. “Our newest members are no exception.
