Jersey Mike’s opens first of 300 stores in Canada

The Greater Toronto Area is getting its first taste of Jersey Mike’s Subs, as its first of 300 stores scheduled to open in Canada celebrated its grand opening Wednesday in Markham, Ontario.

This opening is significant, as it marks the first major international expansion in the Manasquan-based restaurant chain’s 68-year history.

Through an agreement announced in January with Redberry Restaurants, one of Canada’s largest restaurant operators, 300 Jersey Mike’s restaurants will open across Canada by 2034. The openings will come via a combination of Redberry-owned and -operated stores and supported franchisee locations.

To celebrate, Redberry is holding a grand opening and fundraiser from Wednesday through Sunday, supporting Make-A-Wish Canada. Customers who receive a special fundraising coupon distributed through a grassroots effort prior to the opening can make a minimum $3 contribution to Make-A-Wish Canada in exchange for a regular sub.

Customers without a coupon will have a limited-time opportunity to download the Jersey Mike’s app and earn a free regular sub after their first in-app sub purchase and will also be able to support Make-A-Wish Canada via a donation box near the register.

“We are excited to bring ‘A Sub Above’ to the Greater Toronto Area,” Ken Otto, CEO, Redberry, said. “This is Redberry’s first new Jersey Mike’s location to open in Canada, and we can’t wait to share this iconic brand with our new neighbors.”

Markham is the first of six new Jersey Mike’s locations planned for Ontario this year, forming the foundation for rapid new store growth. By the end of the year, Redberry will open additional GTA locations including York Mills and Union Station, as well as three others in Brantford, Guelph and Pickering. These six locations will employ nearly 100 crew members. Redberry also owns the two existing and recently remodeled Jersey Mike’s locations in Kitchener and London.

Jersey Mike’s has had an on-going partnership with Make-A-Wish Canada. In March, the Kitchener and London locations raised $12,000 during Jersey Mike’s Month of Giving to benefit this local charity partner.
