Mount Holly Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center in Lumberton has launched a Stroke Recovery Program under the direction of Dr. Tracey Harris, who is affiliated with Virtua Medical Group. It is the first specialized subacute care offering of its kind for the region.
Mount Holly’s stroke recovery services are tailored to meet the specific needs and goals of an individual, dependent on how they have been impacted by a stroke.
“The importance of a Stroke Recovery Program like this is clear,” Harris said. “Many conditions experienced after a stroke can and do improve with specialized rehabilitation. Our interdisciplinary team of highly trained specialists aims to provide for the best possible outcome for each stroke survivor in our care.”
Board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation, Harris has more than 30 years of medical experience and is recognized as a leader in her specialty. PM&R, also known as physiatry, focuses on restoring health and function with an integrated treatment plan including pain management and physical therapy.
Mount Holly’s multidisciplinary services include physical, occupational and speech therapies. The center’s therapy gym features state-of-the-art equipment and technology to support the unique needs of stroke survivors, including the LiteGait support system, Synchrony Dysphagia Solutions by ACP, as well as mirror therapy and constraint induced movement therapy, among others.
Mount Holly designed its Stroke Recovery Program to meet the rigorous science-based requirements of the American Heart Association’s new Skilled Nursing Facility Stroke Rehabilitation Certification. It is the first subacute facility in the region actively pursuing this recently introduced certification by the AHA, the world’s leading nonprofit organization focused on heart and brain health. The certification’s guidelines for stroke rehabilitation include program management, patient and caregiver education and support, care coordination, clinical management and quality improvement.
“This PM&R-led program — designed to meet the AHA’s evidence-based standards of care for stroke survivors — reflects Mount Holly’s commitment to next-level skilled nursing care,” Kate Bauer, regional director of market development at Marquis Health Consulting Services, which supports the center, said. “Mount Holly has demonstrated experience in stroke recovery care; the creation of this specialized offering is a natural extension of that. The center is pleased to have Dr. Harris lead the initiative, with the support of Mount Holly’s talented team of specialists.”
