Groups say they support plan that would improve service reliability and limit costs for working families

Environmental, labor groups to rally in support of BPU offshore wind infrastructure proposal

A coalition of environmental advocates and labor leaders will hold a rally Tuesday at 5 p.m. in Wall Township in support of a plan by the N.J. Board of Public Utilities meeting to discuss a new plan to responsibly invest in offshore wind.

The event will take place at IBEW Local 400.

Immediately following the rally, attendees will testify at a BPU meeting that is being held on the topic to solicit community input.

The BPU’s plan would create a single interconnection point from Sea Girt to the connection point in Howell at the Larrabee Collection Station that would allow multiple offshore wind developments to connect into the energy grid — increasing the reliability of our electricity grid and resulting in lower costs, the group said.

This coalition intends to explain why this plan is safe for the public and how it will reduce the amount of construction related to offshore wind that will impact coastal communities.

The group feels the BPU’s plan would create union jobs and give a boost to Gov. Phil Murphy’s goal to make New Jersey a national leader in offshore wind.

The following leaders are expected to appear:

  • James Thompson, New Jersey LCV
  • Wyatt Earp, International Brotherhood of Electricians
  • Captain Paul Eidman, Anglers for Offshore Wind
  • Debra Coyle, N.J. Work Environment Council
  • Rev. Ronald Tuff, Greenfaith
  • Elizabeth Cerceo, Clinicians for Climate
  • Sharonda Allen, Operation Grow
  • Doug O’Mally, Environment New Jersey
