Born in Vegas and making a home in New Jersey: BetMGM brings new era of tax revenue, jobs and innovation to the state

New Jersey is a legalized gambling pioneer. It was the first state to open a casino outside of Nevada (1972), one of the first to launch online casinos (2013) and was the first outside of Nevada to promulgate sports betting following the overturning of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (“PASPA”) in 2018.

New Jersey established a reputation as a leader in the land-based and online gambling sectors, driving legislation and promoting responsible gaming practices. Over the past decade, only a few other sectors have experienced the same level of innovation and tax revenue generation as sports betting and online casino.

New Jersey blazed a trail for a new era of sports betting and casino gaming beyond Nevada.

It is why BetMGM, “born in Vegas,” through parent companies MGM Resorts and UK-based Entain, established its headquarters in the state in 2018.

BetMGM and New Jersey represent a significant “win-win” scenario. Our commitment to excellence as a leading sports betting and iGaming operator has contributed to robust state revenue, generating $414 million in taxes from online sports betting and iGaming in 2023.

Through the end of August 2024, BetMGM has paid over $52 million in taxes from iGaming and $5.8 million from sports betting to the state of New Jersey. Taxes collected benefit the state’s Casino Revenue Fund and supports initiatives for the elderly, including reductions in property taxes and utility costs.

Employing over 1,500 people, about 800 of whom are based out of our headquarters in Jersey City, we know that the rapid pace of sports betting and iGaming requires top talent across departments such as technology, customer service, marketing, and compliance.

Ahead of the football season, we launched an enhanced sports betting app with more features to create an even more enjoyable experience. In late August, a BetMGM Casino player in New Jersey celebrated a $6.5 million progressive jackpot win—the largest in regulated U.S. online casino history.

We selected Jersey City for BetMGM headquarters due to its great location, vibrant start-up community, and thriving cultural, culinary, and creative scene. Many of our employees are alumni of New Jersey’s higher education institutions and are committed to building their lives and careers in the state.

One example is BetMGM’s Pride employee resource group, which elevates inclusive workplace policies to positively impact LGBTQ+ employees and cultivate a culture where all employees feel secure in being their authentic selves in our organization. The group holds various in-person events throughout the year to bring members together. The Pride ERG was present at the Jersey City Pride Parade and joined forces to represent at the Las Vegas Pride Parade this year.

In addition to being a great workplace, we actively seek ways to give back to our community.

For the fourth consecutive year, BetMGM has partnered with Volunteers of America to Adopt a Family during the holiday season. BetMGM also held its annual charity golf event that brought in over $4000 donated to Vibrant Emotional Health, an organization that powers the 988 suicide and crisis hotline. Our LatinX ERG was able to support the local community with a school supply donation drive.
